First Aid & Emergency Preparedness
Emergencies can happen at any time, from minor cuts to sudden illness. Being prepared with basic first aid knowledge and emergency plans helps protect your pet and can save lives. Quick action, calm handling, and proper resources are key.

Essential First Aid Basics
Minor Injuries:
- Clean cuts or scrapes with pet-safe antiseptic
- Apply a sterile bandage if needed
- Monitor for signs of infection (redness, swelling, discharge)
Bleeding:
- Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth
- Keep your pet calm and still
- Seek veterinary care for heavy or uncontrolled bleeding
Choking:
- Check if something is visible in the mouth; never blindly reach into the throat
- Use the Heimlich maneuver for dogs if trained
- For cats, gently pick up and tap the back or seek immediate veterinary help
Poisoning:
- Call a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline immediately
- Note the substance, amount, and time of ingestion
